Accelerating the Isle of Wight's journey towards a net zero community
Together For Mission Zero Isle of Wight is a platform to connect, share, discuss and build a community of action around the Isle of Wight Council’s 2040 Mission Zero strategy.
The objective? Established in response to the climate crisis, Together for Mission Zero Isle of Wight recognises that delivery of our mission zero strategy, within the overarching framework of the island’s Biosphere designation, will require profound economic, social and environmental innovation across local business, policy actors, researchers, innovators and civil society. The Together for Mission Zero platform therefore is a decentralised network of support for actors who are driving for change towards mission zero on the island.
The Isle of Wight Councils Mission Zero Strategy is a key component in creating a sustainable future for the Island and, together with other strategies and plans – some already in existence, others coming forward in the next few years, in particular the Island Plan Core Strategy - it will support our valuable yet fragile environment and our status as a UNESCO Biosphere reserve. These strategies are the results of extensive work by many, helped by valuable contributions across our community from people who recognise that this activity is crucial if we are to play a key role in ensuring our Island can be the home it should be and needs to be for future generations.
Together For Mission Zero is intimately connected to the aims of the Island’s UNESCO Biosphere Reserve - fully committed to strengthening the natural connection between Islanders, their nature, and their cultural heritage. This symbiotic relationship is at the core of Connected Wight's position and an important and diversified island wide approach. The Together for Mission Zero community is casting its net as widely as possible across the Island’s communities and stakeholders, encouraging action at all levels.
- IPCC report, August 2021
At the heart of the Together For Mission Zero challenge sits a unique team, with shared backgrounds and passions in renewable energy, circular economy, management consulting and landscape architecture – an inspiring group of concerned Isle of Wight citizens working voluntarily since July 2021 to drive a holistic vision in reaching carbon neutrality on the Island.
But we’re always looking for new champions who will bring their own ideas and approaches to this place-based approach to change ocal to global principle. We hold regular quarterly networking events across the Isle of Wight, and we would be glad to welcome you there.
