Add a Dash of Style to Your Life at SALT
For Bekah Terrell, the closed shop she often walked past was the perfect place to bring her dream to life: an interior shop with a difference. When the space became available for rent, she seized the opportunity, and SALT was born.
SALT, which opened its doors in July 2023 and within mere weeks of signing the lease, has quickly become an integral part of the vibrant Cowes high street, making it feel as though it has always been there. “I’ve always wanted to have a shop like this. My husband and I grew up on the Island, moved away, and then returned to raise our children here and decided that Cowes was the place to be. When my new baby was born, I frequently walked up and down the high street with a pram, passing this long-closed building and when it finally came up for rent, I knew I had to do something special with it. I wanted to sell great coffee and bring something new and fresh. The space was perfect for offering more than just one thing, so I decided to stock a selection of carefully chosen homewares and lifestyle products that are sustainable, ethical, and mostly from small, female-founded businesses, alongside serving excellent coffee. Now that we’ve been open a year, we’ve seen all of the seasons including a busy Christmas and summer and we’ve installed an awning so that people can sit outside and enjoy their coffee all year round.”
SALT offers a curated selection of stock that changes regularly. Customers can enjoy Jasper’s coffee at the tables outside while browsing or take it away. A large central table in the shop is cleared for workshops ranging from Christmas bauble painting to candle making and drawing lessons with ten people per workshop which has been an enormous success. “Jasper’s are our coffee roasters, as we felt it was important to have an Island brand for our coffee, cakes are from Frostbite Bakery, and Saturday buns from Lost MillBakery. The coffee is roasted just 10 minutes up the road and is either walked to us or delivered by electric bike, so the sustainability story is fantastic, and the taste is even better. We have also been stocking locally grown seasonal flower bunches which have been very popular and have collaborated with otherIsland businesses like Mint & Wight and Roake Studios for pop-ups. Our events, all run by local creators, offer a great opportunity for regulars to get together and for new customers to try something different.”
Looking forward, there’s a web shop on the horizon, a quarterly newsletter with subscriber perks for workshops and first looks at new stock, and a whole new season to look forward to of coffee, cake, and beautiful gifts and interiors cementing SALT’s place in Cowes.
